At Brambly Hedge in Castleford, (near Methley, Pontefract and Normanton), we are very lucky to have a large and secure outdoor play area for our children with a separate smaller area for our babies. Over the last few years these areas have been upgraded to include safety play surfaces, extensive grassed areas, cradle swings, sand pits, climbing and balancing equipment, large ‘digging’ areas (children love to dig!), log trains, wall mounted mirrors and chalk boards, a slide, picnic tables, cycle tracks, decking areas, sensory gardens and growing areas, and much, much more.

We are about to take over an additional area of woodland adjacent to the nursery, and once this has been developed (i.e. fenced, grassed and landscaped) it will provide another ‘natural’ play area for our children with trees, log seating and story areas, nature trails and picnic areas.
Our outdoor play environments offer children the freedom to explore, use their senses and be physically active and exuberant - skipping, jumping, climbing, balancing, running around freely and practicing their ball skills – throwing, catching and kicking footballs etc. Whilst having fun and enjoying plenty of fresh air children’s development in all six areas of learning is promoted, for example, children gain ‘Knowledge and Understanding of the World’ as they explore and investigate nature, the weather, the seasons and mini beasts. Children’s ‘Personal, Social and Emotional Development’ is supported as they learn social play and interaction (sharing, taking turns and taking care of each other).
